Back in 1771, the Bolongaro family, prominent tobacco merchants from Stresa, acquired the land where the Boutique Hotel now resides. They were renowned for building the Villa Bolongaro, with Anna Maria Bolongaro being the most significant member of the family. Often referred to as "the saint of Stresa", she was recognized for her generosity and hospitality. Anna Maria dedicated herself to charitable endeavors and supported the financial aspects of the local church's construction and maintainance.
From 1827 to 1828, Anna Maria Bolongaro hosted the renowned priest Antonio Rosmini at her villa. During this period, they formed a strong friendship, supporting each other in various endeavors, including the creation of the Rosminian religious institute. The presence of the abbot in Stresa attracted many prominent figures of the time, such as Alessandro Manzoni, Ruggero Bonghi, and Camillo Benso di Cavour, who engaged in discussions on philosophy, history, and politics at the Stresa palace. Following her passing in 1848, Rosmini inherited properties and land, leading to the establishment of the Rosmini College.
When Rosmini died in 1857, the villa was acquired by the noble family of Elisabeth of Saxony, Duchess of Genoa, who was married to Ferdinand of Savoy. She resided there until her death in 1912. Subsequently, the villa was owned by the Mellerio family, renowned goldsmiths from the French court. In 1940, the entrepreneur Ostini took over the property. Following a remarkable restoration, the villa resumed its original purpose from over 250 years ago – to welcome guests.
